In this section there are five reading passages followed by a total of 25
multiple-choice questions. Read the passages and finish the multiple choices.

Peopledonotanalyzeeveryproblemtheymeet.Sometimestheytryto
rememberasolutionfromthelasttimetheyhadasimilarproblem.Theyoften
accept  the opinions  or ideas  of  other people.  Other  times  they begin  to act
withoutthinking;theytrytofindasolutionbytrialanderror.However,whenall
thesemethodsfail,thepersonwithaproblemhastostartanalyzing.
Therearesixstagesinanalyzingaproblem.
Firstthepersonmustrecognizethatthereisaproblem.Forexample,Sam's
bicycleisbroken,andhecannotrideittoclassasheusuallydoes.Sammustsee
thatthereisaproblemwithhisbicycle.
Next  the  thinker  must  define  the  problem.  Before  Sam  can  repair  his
bicycle,hemustfindthereasonwhyitdoesnotwork.Forinstance,hemust
determineiftheproblemiswiththegears,thebrakes,ortheframe.Hemust
makehisproblemmorespecific.
Now the  person must look  for information that  will make  the problem
clearerandleadtopossiblesolutions.Forinstance,supposeSamdecidesthathis
bikedoesnotworkbecausethereissomethingwrongwiththegearwheels.At
thistime,hecanlookinhisbicyclerepairbookandreadaboutgears.Hecan
talktohisfriendsatthebikeshop.Hecanlookathisgearscarefully.
Afterstudyingtheproblem,thepersonshouldhaveseveralsuggestionsfor
apossiblesolution.TakeSamasanillustration.Hissuggestionsmightbe:put
oilonthegearwheels;buynewgearwheelsandreplacetheoldones;tightenor
loosenthegearwheels.
Eventually  one  suggestion  seems  to  be  the  solution  to  the  problem.

Fastfood,amainstayofAmericaneatingfordecades,mayhavereacheda
plateauintheUnitedStatesasthematuringbaby-boomgenerationlooksfora
morevariedmenu.Fastfoodstillrepresentsa$102billionayearindustry,but
growthhasturnedsluggishrecentlyamidtoughcompetitionfromretailfood

analysts  say.  Signs  of  trouble  in  fast  food  include  price-cutting  by  industry
leaders,includingeffortsbyMcDonald'sto attractcustomerswitha 55cent
hamburger,andmajorplayerspullingoutorselling.O'Pepsico,forexample,is
sellingitsfast-foodrestaurantdivisionthatincludesTacoBell,PizzaHutand
KFC.
"It'sbecomingharderandharderforthesefirmstogrow,"saidJimBrown,a
professorofmarketingatVirginiaTechUniversity."IthinkintheUnitedStates
fastfoodhasreachedasaturationpointbecauseofthenumberofcompetitors

Fast-food  restaurant  revenues  grew  2.  5  percent  in  1996,  according  to
industryfigures,theslowestsincetherecessionof1991.Thatisforcryfromthe
levels  of  the  1970s and  1980s.  According to  the  Food  Marketing Institute,
consumers areusing supermarketsfor 21 percentoftake-home food,nearly
doublethelevelofayearago.Whilefast-foodrestaurantsstilllead,theirshare
slippedsignificantly,from48percentin1996to41percentin1997.
"Consumershaveneverbeenmoredemandingthantheyaretoday,"said
MichaelSansolo,seniorvicepresidentoftheSupermarketTradeGroup."They
arepressedfortime.Moneyisstillanissue…buttheirtastesareincreasingly
diverse--whetherit'sgourmetfoods,ethnicfoodsororganicofferings."
Meanwhile,theagingofthebaby-boompopulation--andthegrowthinthe
numberofso-called"emptynesters"withgrownchildren--hasmeantasurgein
thenumberofpeoplewillingtospendmoreforupscaleitems.Thisgeneration
"will  have the  luxury of  being more  discriminating"  as  their  children  leave
home,notesHarryBalzer,vicepresidentoftheChicago-basedNPDconsulting
group.Balzersaidsome18millionbabyboomerswillbecomeempty-nestersin
thenextl0years,leavingthemwithmoredisposableincometospendondining
